Self Assessment - Three Steps to Success

Evaluating your skills, achievements and personality can be a difficult first step, but necessary to determine what your relevant skills are and therefore what you can offer the employer. Be honest. It is only by defining your strengths and admitting your weaknesses that you can find a job that is right for you. We recommend that you follow the easy 3-step process below to quickly evaluate your potential:

  • Skill Evaluation
  • Key Words
  • Self Assessment

Step 1: SKILL EVALUATION

By objectively evaluating your skills and abilities, you can determine what relevant strengths you can offer a potential employer. We suggest that you define your main skill sets as a useful way to start the evaluation process.
Particularly for oil and gas personnel, it may be helpful to divide your skills into the following areas:

  • Technical Knowledge – Specialist disciplines e.g. Structural Geology, Sedimentology, Geophysics, Petroleum Engineering
  • Industry Knowledge - Experience working with or studying companies and industry.
  • IT/Technical – Geoscience & office software applications, databases, programming, hardware, operating systems.
  • Commercial – Financial, Legal, Marketing, Sales, Budgets, Resource Planning.
  • Analytical – Methodical investigation, Problem solving, Decision Making, Accuracy, Numeracy.
  • Communications – Languages, Networking, Customer Service, Public Speaking, Presentations
  • Managerial – Leadership, Supervision, Delegation, Decision Making, Persuasion.
  • Organisational – Self-Motivation, Teamworking, Co-ordination, Administration, Planning, Time Management.
  • Creativity – Resourcefulness, Innovation, Inventiveness.

Once you have established your skills set, evaluate each skill individually; give them a score from 1 to 10 and ask yourself these questions:

  • What are my main strengths, what do I do best?
  • What are my main weaknesses?
  • What skills do I lack, could I retrain?

Step 2: SKILL EVALUATION - Keywords

In addition to identifying your skills, try and determine the Action words that best illustrate and support your skills and experiences. You will find this evaluation very useful when writing your CV. You may want to prioritise your transferable skills. Remember these are skills that you can bring to any job and any organisation. There are numerous words you can use and the following are just a few examples.

  • What do/did I enjoy most in my current/previous jobs & courses and why?
